Phone Fell in Water? Do This Before You Call Anyone

Smartphone resting on a surface next to a spilled glass of water

Liquid damage is one of the few phone problems where what you do in the first few minutes genuinely changes the outcome. Move fast, but move correctly — some of the most common advice out there does more harm than good.

Do this immediately

  • Power it off right away — don't test if it 'still works', a short circuit under power causes most of the real damage
  • Remove the case, SIM tray, and any attachable covers
  • Dry the outside gently with a soft cloth — don't shake or blow into ports, that pushes liquid further in
  • If it was salt water, pool water, or a sugary drink, that's more urgent — residue corrodes contacts as it dries

Skip the rice

The rice trick is popular because it's free, not because it works well. Rice dust can get into ports and speakers, and it does nothing for the corrosion that starts forming on internal components within hours. It also gives false confidence — the phone may power on fine for a few days, then fail once corrosion sets in.

What actually helps in the meantime

Keep the phone powered off, in a dry room-temperature spot, and get it to a technician within 24 hours if possible. The longer it sits with a charge running through wet components, the more likely you are looking at a logic board repair instead of a simple clean.

Why professional cleaning matters

Once a device comes in, the priority is stopping corrosion before it spreads — the phone is fully disassembled, and an ultrasonic cleaning process removes moisture and residue from the board and connectors, followed by a full function test before anything is reassembled. Micro-soldering repairs are only needed if corrosion has already reached a component, which is exactly what fast action helps avoid.
